eng.anchor-holding-power Calculator
Calculates anchor holding power from fluke area, sediment holding factor, and anchor mass for different bottom types. Holding power of a good anchor in sand is 10–20× its own weight — in mud it drops to 4–8×, explaining why larger anchors are needed in soft bottoms.
Inputs
Anchor Mass Kg
Total mass (kg). Distinct from weight — weight = mass × gravity. Mass is constant; weight varies with location.
Soil Type
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Scope Ratio
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
holding power (kN)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
holding factor HF
A dimensionless multiplier applied in the calculation.
soil type
The classification or type assigned based on the inputs.
scope efficiency
Useful output divided by total input, as a percentage. True 100% efficiency is impossible — losses appear as heat. LEDs: 30–50%. Electric motors: 85–97%. Switching supplies: 85–95%.
HP = m × HF × scope factor
A dimensionless multiplier applied in the calculation.
