eng.building-energy-eui Calculator
Calculates building Energy Use Intensity (EUI) from annual energy consumption and floor area, and benchmarks against CBECS median values. EUI is the standard building energy performance metric — typical US office buildings have EUI of 50–150 kBtu/sf/year; LEED targets require 20–30% below median.
Inputs
Annual Energy Kwh
Capacity to do work (J or kWh). Conserved — converts between forms but total stays constant in a closed system.
Floor Area M2
Two-dimensional surface extent (m²). For complex shapes, break into simpler sub-shapes and sum.
Climate Hdd
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Occupancy Hours Yr
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
energy use intensity EUI (kWh/m²/yr)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
climate-normalized EUI
The value at the specified point or condition.
average power density (W/m²)
The arithmetic mean -- sum divided by count.
benchmark office
Reference value for comparison — the industry standard, historical average, or target that this result is measured against.
EUI = annual kWh / floor area
The result expressed on a per-year basis.
passive house target
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
