eng.cable-thermal-rating-IEC60287 Calculator
Calculates cable current-carrying capacity (ampacity) from IEC 60287 using conductor resistance, insulation thermal resistivity, and ambient temperature. Cable derating for high ambient temperature and grouping must be applied to nameplate ampacity — undersizing cables causes insulation breakdown.
Inputs
I A
Rate of charge flow (A). I = V/R. Above ~100 mA through the body can be lethal. Fuses protect against overcurrent.
R Ohm M
Opposition to current flow (Ω). V = IR. Resistors in series add; in parallel their reciprocals add.
T Ambient C
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
T Max C
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
N Cables
Count of items or occurrences.
Results
conductor loss W/m (total)
The combined total across all inputs and components.
temperature rise budget (K)
The value at the specified point or condition.
estimated current capacity I_max (A)
Electric charge flow rate (A). Governs wire sizing — too much current causes dangerous heating. Fuses protect circuits from overcurrent.
utilisation %
The value at the specified point or condition.
W = I²·R (per phase per metre)
The current phase of the cycle or process.
derating
A standardised quality or risk rating on the applicable scale.
