eng.elastohydrodynamic-film Calculator
Calculates elastohydrodynamic (EHD) film thickness in gear and rolling bearing contacts from Hamrock-Dowson equations. Specific film thickness (Λ = h_min / σ_composite) above 3 indicates full-film lubrication — below 1 causes mixed or boundary lubrication with significant wear.
Inputs
E Star Gpa
Material stiffness (GPa). Stress divided by strain in the elastic range. Steel: 200 GPa. Aluminium: 70 GPa. Rubber: 0.01–0.1 GPa.
Eta0 Pas
Fluid resistance to flow. Water at 20°C: ~1 cP. Honey: 2,000–10,000 cP. Higher viscosity increases pumping power requirements.
U M S
Speed in a specified direction (m/s). Required for momentum, kinetic energy, and wave calculations.
R M
Distance from centre to edge of a circle. Radius = diameter / 2.
W N
Applied force or weight (N or kN). Divide into dead load (permanent) and live load (variable — people, wind, etc.).
Results
minimum film thickness h_min (nm)
The smallest value in the dataset or feasible range.
film thickness (μm)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
h_min = 3.63R·U^0.68·G^0.49·W^-0.073
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
lubrication regime
The operating regime — the mode or zone in which the system is currently operating.
