eng.explosion-overpressure-TNT Calculator
Calculates explosion overpressure and impulse from TNT equivalent mass using the Kingery-Bulmash empirical equations. TNT equivalent converts any explosive to an equivalent TNT mass — ANFO is 0.82 TNT equivalent; black powder is only 0.55 TNT equivalent.
Inputs
Mass Kg
Total mass (kg). Distinct from weight — weight = mass × gravity. Mass is constant; weight varies with location.
Distance M
Separation between two points or total path length. Check that units are consistent throughout the calculation.
W Factor
Useful output divided by total input, as a percentage. 100% is impossible due to losses (heat, friction, resistance).
Results
peak side-on overpressure (kPa)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
scaled distance Z (m/kg^1/3)
The computed distance or separation.
impulse estimate (kPa·ms)
The value at the specified point or condition.
P = f(Z), Z = R/W^(1/3)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
structural damage thresholds
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
