eng.filter-cutoff-frequency Calculator
Calculates the cutoff frequency, bandwidth, and Q factor for RC, RL, and RLC filters from component values. The cutoff frequency of an RC low-pass filter (f = 1/2πRC) defines where the output power falls to half (−3 dB) of the passband level.
Inputs
Resistance Ohm
Opposition to current flow (Ω). V = IR. Resistors in series add; in parallel their reciprocals add.
Capacitance Uf
Ability to store electric charge (F). Capacitors charge quickly and release energy fast. Common values: pF to μF.
Filter Type
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Inductance Mh
Opposition to changing current (H). Inductors store energy in a magnetic field and cause voltage spikes when current is interrupted.
Results
cutoff frequency (Hz)
Frequency at which output power drops to half (−3 dB). For a low-pass filter: signals below this pass; above this are attenuated. For RC circuits: Fc = 1/(2πRC).
cutoff frequency (kHz)
Frequency at which output power drops to half (−3 dB). For a low-pass filter: signals below this pass; above this are attenuated. For RC circuits: Fc = 1/(2πRC).
filter type
The classification or type assigned based on the inputs.
time constant τ (RC)
Time for the capacitor (or inductor) to reach 63.2% of its final value. τ = RC. After 5 time constants (~99.3%), the circuit is effectively at steady state.
Q factor (RLC)
A dimensionless multiplier applied in the calculation.
