eng.fin-efficiency-rectangular Calculator
Calculates fin efficiency and total heat transfer rate for rectangular, triangular, and annular fins from material and geometry. Fin efficiency of 100% means the entire fin surface is at the base temperature — longer, thinner fins have lower efficiency because temperature drops along the fin.
Inputs
L Fin M
Vertical measurement. For health calculators, typically standing height without shoes.
T Fin M
Perpendicular measurement through the material. For insulation: thicker is better. For beams: directly affects bending resistance.
K Fin W Mk
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
H Conv W M2K
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
fin efficiency η_f
Useful output divided by total input, as a percentage. True 100% efficiency is impossible — losses appear as heat. LEDs: 30–50%. Electric motors: 85–97%. Switching supplies: 85–95%.
fin parameter mL
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
m = √(2h/kt) (m⁻¹)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Biot number Bi
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
η_f = tanh(mL)/mL
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
