eng.panel-buckling-Euler Calculator
Calculates the elastic buckling stress for a flat plate in compression or shear from aspect ratio, boundary conditions, and material properties. Plate buckling stress scales with (t/b)² — thin plates buckle at stresses well below the material yield strength.
Inputs
E Gpa
Material stiffness (GPa). Stress divided by strain in the elastic range. Steel: 200 GPa. Aluminium: 70 GPa. Rubber: 0.01–0.1 GPa.
T Mm
Perpendicular measurement through the material. For insulation: thicker is better. For beams: directly affects bending resistance.
B Mm
Horizontal extent perpendicular to the length.
K Coeff
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
A Mm
Linear measurement. Ensure consistent units: 1 m = 1,000 mm = 3.281 ft.
Results
critical buckling load Ncr (N/mm)
Critical compressive force that causes sudden lateral collapse of a column. Above this, the column is unstable. Always design with a safety factor applied below this value.
critical stress σ_cr (MPa)
Internal force per unit area (Pa or MPa). Must stay below yield strength in service. Beyond yield: permanent deformation. Beyond tensile strength: fracture.
Ncr = K·π²E·t³/(12(1-ν²)b²)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
aspect ratio a/b
The proportional relationship between two quantities.
