eng.pump-efficiency Calculator
Calculates pump hydraulic efficiency, shaft efficiency, and overall efficiency from measured head, flow, and input power. Pump best efficiency point (BEP) is the design flow — operating more than 30% away from BEP causes vibration, cavitation, and rapid wear.
Inputs
Flow Lps
Volume of fluid per unit time. Used to size pipes, pumps, and ducts.
Head M
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Shaft Kw
Rate of energy transfer (W). P = V×I (electrical). P = F×v (mechanical). 1 horsepower ≈ 746 W.
Fluid Density
Mass per unit volume (kg/m³). Water: 1,000. Air: 1.225. Steel: 7,850. Affects buoyancy, flow, and structural loads.
Results
pump efficiency
Useful output divided by total input, as a percentage. True 100% efficiency is impossible — losses appear as heat. LEDs: 30–50%. Electric motors: 85–97%. Switching supplies: 85–95%.
hydraulic power (kW)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
shaft power (kW)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
specific speed Ns (approx)
The computed rate of movement or processing.
efficiency = P_hyd / P_shaft
