eng.surface-finish-machining Calculator
Calculates machining surface finish (Ra) from tool nose radius, feed rate, and cutting conditions using the theoretical finish formula. Theoretical Ra = f²/32r where f is feed rate and r is nose radius — actual Ra is typically 2–4× theoretical due to built-up edge and vibration.
Inputs
Feed Mm Rev
Amount per unit of time or per unit quantity. Check the denominator before interpreting.
Tool Radius Mm
Distance from centre to edge of a circle. Radius = diameter / 2.
Cutting Speed M Min
Rate of movement. 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h = 2.237 mph.
Depth Of Cut Mm
Vertical extent downward, or thickness of a layer. For tanks: affects pressure at the base (P = ρgh).
Results
average roughness Ra (µm)
The arithmetic mean -- sum divided by count.
peak-to-valley Rt (µm)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Ra = f²/(32r) × 1000 µm
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
ISO finish grade
Letter or numerical grade indicating quality, creditworthiness, or performance on a defined scale.
feed recommendation
Suggested action or value based on the computed results and applicable best-practice guidelines.
