eng.weld-throat-fillet Calculator
Calculates fillet weld throat area, shear capacity, and equivalent leg size from AISC/AWS standards for structural welds. Fillet weld nominal strength is 0.6 × FEXX where FEXX is the electrode tensile strength — E70 electrode has FEXX = 70 ksi (483 MPa).
Inputs
P Kn
Push or pull (N). F = ma. Net force determines acceleration. Account for all forces including gravity and friction.
Weld Length Mm
Linear measurement. Ensure consistent units: 1 m = 1,000 mm = 3.281 ft.
Fillet Size Mm
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Fu Mpa
Maximum stress before fracture. Structural steel: 400–700 MPa. Aluminium alloys: 200–500 MPa.
Results
shear stress in weld (MPa)
Internal force per unit area (Pa or MPa). Must stay below yield strength in service. Beyond yield: permanent deformation. Beyond tensile strength: fracture.
weld design resistance Fw (MPa)
Opposition to current flow (Ω). Ohm's Law: V = IR. Lower resistance means more current for the same voltage.
utilization ratio
Fraction of capacity actually being used. Above 80–85% is typically considered high utilisation; above 95% leads to queuing and latency spikes.
status (EC3 γM2=1.25)
Current state of the system, process, or metric — typically pass/fail, healthy/warning/critical, or a descriptive classification.
effective throat = 0.707a
The value at the specified point or condition.
fillet weld resistance
Opposition to current flow (Ω). Ohm's Law: V = IR. Lower resistance means more current for the same voltage.
