sci.absorption-column-NTU Calculator
Calculates the number of transfer units (NTU) and height of a packed absorption column from inlet/outlet concentrations and equilibrium data. NTU = integral of dy/(y−y*) from inlet to outlet — a taller column or better packing (larger mass transfer coefficient KYa) reduces the number of stages needed.

Results
number of transfer units NTU
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
absorption factor A = L/(mG)
A dimensionless multiplier applied in the calculation.
inlet equilibrium y₁* (mol frac)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
efficiency (% absorbed)
Useful output divided by total input, as a percentage. True 100% efficiency is impossible — losses appear as heat. LEDs: 30–50%. Electric motors: 85–97%. Switching supplies: 85–95%.
NTU = A/(A-1) × ln[(y₁-mx₂)/(y₂-mx₂)(1-1/A)+1/A]
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
A > 1 required
