sci.atmospheric-lapse-rate Calculator
Calculates the dry adiabatic lapse rate (DALR = g/cp = 9.8 °C/km) and environmental lapse rate from radiosonde data to assess atmospheric stability. If environmental lapse rate > DALR, the atmosphere is absolutely unstable — convective uplift creates cumulonimbus clouds and thunderstorms.
Inputs
T Surface C
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
Altitude M
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Lapse Type
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
temperature at altitude (°C)
The value at the specified point or condition.
pressure at altitude (kPa)
The value at the specified point or condition.
air density at altitude (kg/m³)
The value at the specified point or condition.
lapse rate applied (°C/km)
The value at the specified point or condition.
ISA model
The most frequently occurring value.
stability
Measure of how robust the system, structure, or process is to perturbations. Low stability means small changes can cause large deviations.
