sci.bioretention-sizing Calculator
Calculates bioretention cell sizing (area, depth, media volume) for stormwater runoff treatment from contributing drainage area and design storm. Bioretention cells are sized to capture the water quality volume (WQv) — typically the first 25 mm of runoff, which carries 80–90% of the annual pollutant load.
Inputs
Impervious Area M2
Two-dimensional surface extent (m²). For complex shapes, break into simpler sub-shapes and sum.
Design Storm Mm
Vertical extent downward, or thickness of a layer. For tanks: affects pressure at the base (P = ρgh).
Infiltration Rate Mm Hr
Amount per unit of time or per unit quantity. Check the denominator before interpreting.
Ponding Depth Mm
Vertical extent downward, or thickness of a layer. For tanks: affects pressure at the base (P = ρgh).
Results
runoff volume (m³)
The computed three-dimensional volume.
bioretention cell area (m²)
The computed two-dimensional surface area.
cell to drainage area ratio
The proportional relationship between two quantities.
drainage time (hours)
The result expressed in hours. Divide by 24 to convert to days.
typical cell:watershed ratio
The proportional relationship between two quantities.
