sci.bloodstain-impact-angle Calculator
Calculates the blood droplet impact angle α = arcsin(width/length) from the elliptical bloodstain geometry on a surface. α < 30° indicates glancing impact from a distant source; α close to 90° indicates nearly vertical fall — multiple stains from a single event define the area of origin by back-projection of trajectories.
Inputs
Width Mm
Horizontal extent perpendicular to the length.
Length Mm
Linear measurement. Ensure consistent units: 1 m = 1,000 mm = 3.281 ft.
Results
impact angle θ (degrees)
The magnitude or severity on the applicable scale.
sin θ = width/length
The computed linear length.
directionality ratio L/W
The computed direction or bearing, typically in degrees from north or as a cardinal direction.
flight path relative to surface
The value at the specified point or condition.
sin(θ) = minor axis / major axis
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
