sci.channel-capacity-Shannon Calculator
Calculates Shannon-Hartley channel capacity C = B log₂(1+S/N) and the minimum Eb/N₀ required to achieve a given spectral efficiency. The Shannon limit (minimum Eb/N₀ for any positive rate) is −1.59 dB — modern turbo and LDPC codes achieve within 0.1 dB of this limit.
Inputs
B Hz
Horizontal extent perpendicular to the length.
S W
Rate of energy transfer (W). P = V×I (electrical). P = F×v (mechanical). 1 horsepower ≈ 746 W.
N0 W Hz
Mass per unit volume (kg/m³). Water: 1,000. Air: 1.225. Steel: 7,850. Affects buoyancy, flow, and structural loads.
Results
channel capacity C (Mbps)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
SNR (linear)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
SNR (dB)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
noise power N (W)
Random or irrelevant variation in the measurement.
C = B·log₂(1 + S/N)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
spectral efficiency C/B
Useful output divided by total input, as a percentage. True 100% efficiency is impossible — losses appear as heat. LEDs: 30–50%. Electric motors: 85–97%. Switching supplies: 85–95%.
