sci.charpy-impact-ductility Calculator
Calculates the Charpy impact energy absorbed per unit area and determines ductile-brittle transition temperature from a temperature series. Charpy V-notch energy > 27 J at the minimum design temperature is required for structural steel to prevent brittle fracture under impact.
Inputs
Impact Energy J
Capacity to do work (J or kWh). Conserved — converts between forms but total stays constant in a closed system.
Cross Section Mm2
Two-dimensional surface extent (m²). For complex shapes, break into simpler sub-shapes and sum.
Yield Strength Mpa
Stress at which permanent deformation begins. Design loads should stay below this — apply a safety factor of 1.5–3×.
Temperature C
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
Results
Charpy notch toughness CVN (J/cm²)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
impact energy (J)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
fracture mode
The most frequently occurring value.
CVN = E / A
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
CVN classification
Category assigned based on where the computed value falls on a defined scale. Check which standard or guideline defines these boundaries.
ASTM A709 Bridge Steel
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
