sci.cold-work-hardening Calculator
Calculates the increase in yield strength and hardness from cold working (plastic deformation) using the Hall–Petch and strain hardening relationships. Cold working increases dislocation density exponentially — aluminium work-hardens significantly while annealing restores ductility by allowing dislocations to annihilate.
Inputs
Initial Yield Mpa
Stress at which permanent deformation begins. Design loads should stay below this — apply a safety factor of 1.5–3×.
Strength Coefficient Mpa
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Strain Hardening Exp
Dimensionless fractional deformation. Elastic strain is recoverable; plastic strain is permanent.
True Strain Applied
Dimensionless fractional deformation. Elastic strain is recoverable; plastic strain is permanent.
Results
new yield strength (MPa)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
UTS (MPa)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
% cold work
