sci.complex-impedance-RL Calculator
Calculates RL circuit impedance Z = √(R² + (ωL)²) and phase angle φ = arctan(ωL/R) at a given frequency. At the corner frequency f_c = R/(2πL), impedance magnitude is √2 × R and phase angle = 45° — inductive reactance XL = ωL grows linearly with frequency.
Inputs
R Ohm
Opposition to current flow (Ω). V = IR. Resistors in series add; in parallel their reciprocals add.
L Mh
Opposition to changing current (H). Inductors store energy in a magnetic field and cause voltage spikes when current is interrupted.
F Khz
Cycles per second (Hz). Audible sound: 20 Hz – 20 kHz. Make sure units match what the formula expects.
Results
inductive reactance XL (Ω)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
impedance magnitude |Z| (Ω)
Total opposition to AC current (Ω), combining resistance and reactance. Z = √(R² + X²). Maximum power transfer occurs when source and load impedances match.
phase angle φ (°)
The current phase of the cycle or process.
quality factor Q
A qualitative assessment of how the result compares to the desired standard or benchmark.
Z = R + jXL = R + j·2πfL
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
power factor cos φ
A dimensionless multiplier applied in the calculation.
