sci.contaminant-retardation-factor Calculator
Calculates the retardation factor R = 1 + (ρ_b/n) × Kd for a contaminant adsorbing to aquifer solids, where Kd is the distribution coefficient. Retardation factor of 10 means the contaminant plume migrates 10× slower than groundwater — organic contaminants with high Kow (e.g., PCBs) have large Kd and high retardation.
Inputs
Rho B Kg M3
Mass per unit volume (kg/m³). Water: 1,000. Air: 1.225. Steel: 7,850. Affects buoyancy, flow, and structural loads.
N Porosity
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Kd Ml G
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
retardation factor R
A dimensionless multiplier applied in the calculation.
relative contaminant velocity v/v_water
The value at the specified point or condition.
arrival time ratio t_cont/t_tracer
The proportional relationship between two quantities.
R = 1 + ρb·Kd/n
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
contaminant class
The classification assigned based on the computed value.
