sci.convection-heat-coefficient Calculator
Calculates convective heat transfer using Q = hA(T_surface − T_fluid) and estimates the convective coefficient h from Nusselt number correlations. Natural convection h ≈ 2–25 W/(m²·K); forced convection h ≈ 25–250 W/(m²·K) — boiling and condensation reach 2,500–100,000 W/(m²·K).
Inputs
Nusselt Number
Count of items or occurrences.
Thermal Conductivity W Mk
How easily heat flows through the material (W/m·K). Metals are high; insulation materials are very low.
Characteristic Length M
Linear measurement. Ensure consistent units: 1 m = 1,000 mm = 3.281 ft.
Surface Temp C
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
Fluid Temp C
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
Results
convection coefficient h (W/m²K)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
heat flux q (W/m²)
The value at the specified point or condition.
h = Nu × k / L
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
free convection air
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
water forced convection
The value at the specified point or condition.
Nu correlations
The strength and direction of the linear relationship between the two variables (-1 to +1).
