sci.crop-water-deficit Calculator
Calculates crop water deficit (D = ET_c − rainfall − irrigation) and depletion fraction to determine when to irrigate. Irrigation is triggered when soil water depletion exceeds the allowable depletion fraction p × TAW — sensitive crops use p = 0.4; drought-tolerant crops p = 0.6.
Inputs
Et0 Mm Day
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Kc
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Rainfall Mm
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Soil Fc Pct
Maximum throughput or storage. Operating near 100% capacity typically increases failures and wait times.
Soil Wp Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Root Depth Mm
Vertical extent downward, or thickness of a layer. For tanks: affects pressure at the base (P = ρgh).
Results
crop evapotranspiration ETc (mm/day)
The proportional relationship between two quantities.
daily irrigation needed (mm)
IRR (internal rate of return) -- the annualised return rate at which net present value equals zero. If IRR exceeds the hurdle rate, the investment adds value.
total available water TAW (mm)
The combined total across all inputs and components.
ETc = Kc × ET₀ (FAO-56)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
days until depleted at 60% MAD
The value at the specified point or condition.
irrigation decision
IRR (internal rate of return) -- the annualised return rate at which net present value equals zero. If IRR exceeds the hurdle rate, the investment adds value.
