sci.debye-length-electrolyte Calculator
Calculates the Debye screening length λ_D = √(ε₀kT/(ne²)) in an electrolyte or plasma, the scale over which charge perturbations are screened. In 0.1 M NaCl at 25 °C, λ_D = 0.96 nm — at physiological ionic strength (0.15 M), λ_D ≈ 0.8 nm, meaning electrostatic interactions are screened beyond ~5 nm in cells.
Inputs
C Mol L
Amount of solute per unit volume. Higher concentration = more solute dissolved.
Z Valence
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
T K
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
Eps R
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
Debye screening length λ_D (nm)
The computed linear length.
ionic strength (mol/L)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
temperature effect
The change in the property attributable to the temperature difference. Many material properties are temperature-dependent.
λ_D = √(εε₀kT / 2NAce²z²)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
practical range
The difference between the maximum and minimum values.
