sci.distillation-HETP-efficiency Calculator
Calculates HETP (Height Equivalent to a Theoretical Plate) for a distillation column from packing height and theoretical stages: HETP = Z/N_th. Structured packing (Sulzer Mellapak) gives HETP ≈ 0.2–0.5 m — random packing: 0.3–1.0 m; distillation trays: 0.4–0.9 m per theoretical stage.
Inputs
Column Height M
Vertical measurement. For health calculators, typically standing height without shoes.
Hetp M
Vertical measurement. For health calculators, typically standing height without shoes.
F Feed Mol S
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Alpha Volatility
Annualised standard deviation of returns, as a decimal (e.g. 0.2 for 20%). Higher volatility increases option value. Implied vol is derived from market prices.
Results
actual theoretical stages N
The phase or stage in the progression determined by the computed value.
minimum stages N_min (total reflux)
The smallest value in the dataset or feasible range.
minimum reflux ratio R_min (Underwood)
The smallest value in the dataset or feasible range.
operating reflux R = 1.2 R_min
A standardised quality or risk rating on the applicable scale.
