sci.equivalence-ratio-combustion Calculator
Calculates fuel-air equivalence ratio φ = (F/A)/(F/A)_stoich and air-fuel equivalence ratio λ = 1/φ from measured composition or mass flows. φ < 1 (lean): excess air, lower temperature, lower NOx; φ > 1 (rich): incomplete combustion, CO and HC emissions — petrol engines operate at φ = 1 (±0.005) with closed-loop lambda control.
Inputs
Fuel Kg S
Total mass (kg). Distinct from weight — weight = mass × gravity. Mass is constant; weight varies with location.
Air Kg S
Total mass (kg). Distinct from weight — weight = mass × gravity. Mass is constant; weight varies with location.
Stoich Afr
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
equivalence ratio φ = AFR_st/AFR
The proportional relationship between two quantities.
excess air ratio λ = AFR/AFR_st
The proportional relationship between two quantities.
excess air (%)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
mixture type
The classification or type assigned based on the inputs.
lambda sensor
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
thermal efficiency
Useful output divided by total input, as a percentage. True 100% efficiency is impossible — losses appear as heat. LEDs: 30–50%. Electric motors: 85–97%. Switching supplies: 85–95%.
