sci.FFT-resolution-sampling Calculator
Calculates FFT frequency resolution Δf = f_s/N and Nyquist frequency from sample rate and buffer length, with window function trade-offs. Zero-padding increases DFT density but does not improve true resolution — only increasing the actual record length improves spectral resolution.
Inputs
Fs Hz
Cycles per second (Hz). Audible sound: 20 Hz – 20 kHz. Make sure units match what the formula expects.
N Samples
Count of items or occurrences.
Signal Hz
Cycles per second (Hz). Audible sound: 20 Hz – 20 kHz. Make sure units match what the formula expects.
Results
frequency resolution Δf (Hz)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
Nyquist frequency (Hz)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
record length T (s)
The computed linear length.
nearest FFT bin for signal
The meaningful information component, separated from noise.
