sci.hurricane-wind-pressure Calculator
Calculates hurricane-generated wind pressure and storm surge height from maximum sustained wind speed and central pressure deficit. Category 5 hurricane (1-min sustained winds > 70 m/s) generates dynamic wind pressure > 2.5 kPa — design wind loads for coastal structures use 700-year return period values.
Inputs
- Pc Hpa
- Force per unit area (Pa). Atmospheric pressure at sea level: 101,325 Pa. Check whether gauge or absolute pressure is required.

- R Max Km
- Distance from centre to edge of a circle. Radius = diameter / 2.
- Lat Deg
- Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
- Vmax estimate (m/s)
- The value at the specified point or condition.
- Vmax (knots)
- Sample size or count used in the calculation.
- central pressure deficit ΔP (hPa)
- Sample size or count used in the calculation.
- Coriolis parameter f (rad/s)
- Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
- outer wind radius estimate (km)
- The computed radius -- half the diameter.
- Saffir-Simpson category
- The classification bucket this result falls into based on the computed value and the applicable reference scale.
