sci.Jominy-hardenability-DI Calculator
Calculates the ideal critical diameter DI from Jominy end-quench test data and steel composition using Grossmann's method. DI quantifies steel hardenability — 4340 steel has DI ≈ 100 mm (can fully harden a 100 mm bar); 1040 plain carbon steel has DI ≈ 10 mm.
Inputs
C Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Mn Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Cr Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Mo Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Ni Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
ideal critical diameter DI (in)
The computed diameter -- twice the radius.
ideal critical diameter DI (mm)
The computed diameter -- twice the radius.
estimated case depth (mm, oil quench)
The computed depth.
DI = DI_C × f_Mn × f_Cr × f_Mo × f_Ni
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
multiplying factors
A dimensionless multiplier applied in the calculation.
