sci.laser-gaussian-beam-waist Calculator
Calculates Gaussian laser beam waist w(z) = w₀√(1+(z/z_R)²), Rayleigh range z_R = πw₀²/λ, and far-field divergence angle. A 1 mm beam waist at 532 nm has z_R = 5.9 m — beyond 5.9 m, beam diverges linearly; at 59 m the radius is ~10× the waist.
Inputs
W0 Mm
Waist circumference. Elevated waist circumference is a risk factor for metabolic disease independent of total weight.
Lambda Nm
Distance between successive wave crests. Related to frequency: λ = speed / frequency.
Z Mm
Separation between two points or total path length. Check that units are consistent throughout the calculation.
Results
beam radius at z, w(z) (mm)
The computed radius -- half the diameter.
Rayleigh length z_R (mm)
The computed linear length.
wavefront radius R(z) (mm)
The computed radius -- half the diameter.
far-field divergence θ (mrad)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
w(z) = w₀·√(1+(z/z_R)²)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
regime
The operating regime — the mode or zone in which the system is currently operating.
