sci.leaf-area-index Calculator
Calculates Leaf Area Index (LAI = total one-sided leaf area/ground area) from light interception measurements using Beer-Lambert law: K = −ln(I/I₀)/(LAI). Beer-Lambert extinction coefficient K varies from 0.3 (erect leaves) to 0.8 (horizontal leaves) — LAI > 4 intercepts > 90% of incoming solar radiation.
Inputs
Total Leaf Area M2
Two-dimensional surface extent (m²). For complex shapes, break into simpler sub-shapes and sum.
Ground Area M2
Two-dimensional surface extent (m²). For complex shapes, break into simpler sub-shapes and sum.
Extinction Coeff K
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Solar Radiation Incident W M2
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
leaf area index LAI
A normalised score comparing the result to a reference baseline.
radiation at canopy bottom (W/m²)
The value at the specified point or condition.
fraction of absorbed PAR (fAPAR)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
Beer-Lambert: I = I₀·exp(-k·LAI)

LAI by crop
