sci.light-refraction Calculator
Calculates the angle of refraction at an interface using Snell's law: n₁ sin θ₁ = n₂ sin θ₂, and finds the critical angle for total internal reflection. Critical angle = arcsin(n₂/n₁) — for glass (n=1.5) to air, θ_c ≈ 41.8°, forming the basis for fibre optic cables.
Inputs
Angle I
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
N1
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
N2
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Wavelength Nm
Distance between successive wave crests. Related to frequency: λ = speed / frequency.
Results
refracted angle (deg)
The computed angle in degrees or radians.
critical angle for TIR (deg)
The computed angle in degrees or radians.
reflectance (normal incidence)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
total internal reflection?
The combined total across all inputs and components.
