sci.lung-volumes-FRC-nitrogen-washout Calculator
Calculates functional residual capacity (FRC) from nitrogen washout test, and total lung capacity (TLC) and residual volume (RV) from spirometry plus FRC. Normal adult FRC ≈ 2.5 L; RV ≈ 1.5 L; TLC ≈ 6 L — FRC increases in COPD (air trapping) and decreases in restrictive disease.
Inputs
V Initial L
Three-dimensional space occupied (m³ or L). 1 m³ = 1,000 L.
N2 Initial Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
N2 Final Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
V Bag L
Three-dimensional space occupied (m³ or L). 1 m³ = 1,000 L.
Results
FRC (Functional Residual Capacity, L)
The type of mathematical function or operational classification determined by the calculation.
Estimated TLC (L)
The value at the specified point or condition.
Nitrogen washout: FRC = N₂f·V_bag/(N₂i − N₂f)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
FRC normal adult
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
clinical interpretation
Qualitative summary of what the computed numbers mean in practical terms.
