sci.mie-scattering-parameter Calculator
Calculates the Mie scattering efficiency factor and cross-section for spherical particles of arbitrary size relative to wavelength. Mie parameter x = 2πr/λ — when x ≪ 1 Mie reduces to Rayleigh scattering; when x ≫ 1 geometric optics applies.
Inputs
Particle Diameter Um
Distance across a circle through its centre. Always confirm units match the rest of the calculation.
Wavelength Nm
Distance between successive wave crests. Related to frequency: λ = speed / frequency.
Refractive Index Real
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
size parameter x = πd/λ
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
scattering regime
The operating regime — the mode or zone in which the system is currently operating.
particle diameter (µm)
The computed diameter -- twice the radius.
wavelength (nm)
The computed linear length.
Rayleigh (x<<1): σ ∝ λ⁻⁴
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
cloud droplets (x~10)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
