sci.nitrogen-balance-crop-system Calculator
Calculates soil nitrogen balance: N_balance = N_input − N_output − N_storage, accounting for fertiliser, mineralisation, crop uptake, leaching, and denitrification. Leaching losses below root zone > 25 kg N/ha/yr indicate unsustainable management — nitrate leaching into groundwater causes eutrophication and health concerns.
Inputs
N Fertilizer Kg Ha
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
N Fixation Kg Ha
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
N Deposition Kg Ha
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
N Crop Removal Kg Ha
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
N Leaching Kg Ha
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
nitrogen balance (kg N/ha)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
total N inputs (kg/ha)
The combined total across all inputs and components.
total N outputs (kg/ha)
The combined total across all inputs and components.
nitrogen use efficiency NUE (%)
Useful output divided by total input, as a percentage. True 100% efficiency is impossible — losses appear as heat. LEDs: 30–50%. Electric motors: 85–97%. Switching supplies: 85–95%.
