sci.ocean-mixed-layer-depth Calculator
Calculates ocean mixed layer depth from temperature/salinity profiles using a density threshold criterion (Δσ = 0.03 kg/m³ from 10 m reference). Mixed layer depth ranges from < 20 m in summer to > 200 m in winter high latitudes — it controls air-sea CO₂ exchange, nutrient supply, and heat storage.
Inputs
Surface Temp C
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
Mixed Layer Temp C
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
Wind Speed M S
Rate of movement. 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h = 2.237 mph.
Latitude Deg
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
Ekman depth (m)
The computed depth.
estimated mixed layer depth (m)
The computed depth.
thermal gradient ΔT (°C)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
Coriolis parameter f (s⁻¹)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Ekman depth = 0.4U/f
The computed depth.
MLD seasonal range
The difference between the maximum and minimum values.
