sci.paint-dry-film-thickness Calculator
Calculates dry film thickness (DFT) of a paint coating from wet film thickness (WFT) and volume solids: DFT = WFT × %solids/100. Minimum DFT for corrosion protection in marine environments: 300–500 µm total — each coat must be measured with an eddy-current gauge after drying.
Inputs
Wft Micron
Perpendicular measurement through the material. For insulation: thicker is better. For beams: directly affects bending resistance.
Volume Solids Pct
Three-dimensional space occupied (m³ or L). 1 m³ = 1,000 L.
Overlap Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
dry film thickness DFT (μm)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
theoretical spreading rate (m²/L)
The value at the specified point or condition.
effective DFT with overlap (μm)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
DFT = WFT × VS
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
coats needed for 125 μm DFT
The value at the specified point or condition.
DFT classification
Category assigned based on where the computed value falls on a defined scale. Check which standard or guideline defines these boundaries.
