sci.plug-flow-reactor-PFR-sizing Calculator
Calculates PFR volume from the design equation V = F_A0 × ∫dX/(−r_A) for a desired conversion, and residence time τ = V/v₀. For first-order kinetics: V_PFR = (F_A0/k×C_A0) × (−ln(1−X)) — PFR volume is always smaller than CSTR volume for the same conversion and positive-order kinetics.
Inputs
F0 Mol S
Amount per unit of time or per unit quantity. Check the denominator before interpreting.
K Per S
Amount per unit of time or per unit quantity. Check the denominator before interpreting.
Cin Mol L
Amount of solute per unit volume. Higher concentration = more solute dissolved.
X Target
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
PFR volume required V (L)
The computed three-dimensional volume.
mean residence time τ (s)
Arithmetic average — sum divided by count. Simple and familiar, but pulled by outliers. If your data contains extreme values, the median may be more representative.
space velocity (1/s)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
