sci.polymer-melt-viscosity-WLF Calculator
Calculates polymer melt viscosity shift factor from WLF equation: log(aT) = −C₁(T−T_ref)/(C₂+T−T_ref). WLF equation is valid from Tg to Tg+100°C — above this temperature, an Arrhenius activation energy model is more appropriate.
Inputs
Eta Tg
Fluid resistance to flow. Water at 20°C: ~1 cP. Honey: 2,000–10,000 cP. Higher viscosity increases pumping power requirements.
T K
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
Tg K
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
C1
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
C2 K
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
viscosity η (Pa·s)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
shift factor log(aT)
A dimensionless multiplier applied in the calculation.
shift factor aT
A dimensionless multiplier applied in the calculation.
WLF: log aT = −C₁(T−Tg)/(C₂+T−Tg)
The value at the specified point or condition.
temperature above Tg
The value at the specified point or condition.
flow regime
Whether the flow is laminar (smooth, ordered) or turbulent (chaotic). Determined by the Reynolds number: below 2,300 = laminar; above 4,000 = turbulent.
