sci.polymer-viscosity-MFI Calculator
Calculates melt flow index (MFI) from polymer molecular weight using empirical correlations, and converts between MFI and melt viscosity at the test shear rate. MFI for injection moulding: 5–50 g/10 min; extrusion: 0.5–5 g/10 min — lower MFI = higher molecular weight = better mechanical properties but harder to process.
Inputs
Load Kg
Applied force or weight (N or kN). Divide into dead load (permanent) and live load (variable — people, wind, etc.).
Temperature C
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
Mass G 10Min
Volume of fluid per unit time. Used to size pipes, pumps, and ducts.
Results
melt flow index MFI (g/10min)
A normalised score comparing the result to a reference baseline.
relative viscosity estimate
The value at the specified point or condition.
processability
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
test standard
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
common MFI values
The computed numeric or monetary value.
MFI inversely ∝ molecular weight
The computed weight (gravitational force) or mass.
