sci.precipitable-water Calculator
Calculates precipitable water (total column water vapour) from radiosonde humidity profiles by integrating water vapour mixing ratio with pressure. Precipitable water > 50 mm is associated with heavy rainfall and flash flood potential — tropical regions regularly exceed 60 mm; polar regions have < 10 mm.
Inputs
Surface Mixing Ratio G Kg
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Tropopause Pressure Hpa
Force per unit area (Pa). Atmospheric pressure at sea level: 101,325 Pa. Check whether gauge or absolute pressure is required.
Surface Pressure Hpa
Force per unit area (Pa). Atmospheric pressure at sea level: 101,325 Pa. Check whether gauge or absolute pressure is required.
Lapse Rate K Km
Amount per unit of time or per unit quantity. Check the denominator before interpreting.
Results
precipitable water (mm)
The value at the specified point or condition.
integrated water vapor (kg/m²)
The value at the specified point or condition.
surface mixing ratio
The proportional relationship between two quantities.
pressure depth
The computed depth.
PW ≈ q × ΔP / g
