sci.rankine-cycle-efficiency Calculator
Calculates Rankine steam cycle efficiency, specific work output, and heat input from turbine inlet and condenser pressures. Modern supercritical steam cycles (600 °C, 300 bar) achieve 45–47% efficiency — the theoretical Carnot limit between the same temperatures is ~57%.
Inputs
Boiler Pressure Mpa
Force per unit area (Pa). Atmospheric pressure at sea level: 101,325 Pa. Check whether gauge or absolute pressure is required.
Condenser Pressure Kpa
Force per unit area (Pa). Atmospheric pressure at sea level: 101,325 Pa. Check whether gauge or absolute pressure is required.
Boiler Temp C
Thermal state of the substance. Check whether the formula needs Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin (K = °C + 273.15).
Pump Efficiency Pct
Useful output divided by total input, as a percentage. 100% is impossible due to losses (heat, friction, resistance).
Results
cycle efficiency (approx)
Useful output divided by total input, as a percentage. True 100% efficiency is impossible — losses appear as heat. LEDs: 30–50%. Electric motors: 85–97%. Switching supplies: 85–95%.
turbine work output (kJ/kg)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
pump work input (kJ/kg)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
Carnot limit
