sci.relativistic-mass Calculator
Calculates relativistic momentum p = γmv and effective inertia from particle velocity and rest mass. At the Large Hadron Collider, protons travel at 0.999999991c with γ ≈ 7,461 — their total relativistic energy is 6.5 TeV, equivalent to a flying mosquito.
Inputs
Rest Mass Kg
Total mass (kg). Distinct from weight — weight = mass × gravity. Mass is constant; weight varies with location.
Velocity Ms
Speed in a specified direction (m/s). Required for momentum, kinetic energy, and wave calculations.
Kinetic Energy Mev
Capacity to do work (J or kWh). Conserved — converts between forms but total stays constant in a closed system.
Results
relativistic mass (kg)
The computed mass of the object or substance.
Lorentz factor γ
A dimensionless multiplier applied in the calculation.
kinetic energy (J)
Energy of motion: KE = ½mv². Scales with the SQUARE of velocity — doubling speed quadruples kinetic energy. This is why crash severity grows so rapidly with speed.
velocity / c
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
γ = 1/√(1-β²)
