sci.soil-organic-matter-SOM Calculator
Calculates soil organic matter content from loss-on-ignition (LOI) or Walkley-Black titration, and converts to organic carbon using the Van Bemmelen factor (OM = 1.724 × OC). Topsoil OM: 1–6% in agricultural soils; > 30% in peaty soils — OM improves water retention, aggregation, and biological activity.
Inputs
Organic Carbon Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Bulk Density G Cc
Mass per unit volume (kg/m³). Water: 1,000. Air: 1.225. Steel: 7,850. Affects buoyancy, flow, and structural loads.
Depth Cm
Vertical extent downward, or thickness of a layer. For tanks: affects pressure at the base (P = ρgh).
Results
soil organic matter SOM (%)
The value at the specified point or condition.
SOC stock (Mg C/ha)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
CO₂ equivalent (Mg CO₂/ha)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
SOM = SOC × 1.724
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
SOM classification
Category assigned based on where the computed value falls on a defined scale. Check which standard or guideline defines these boundaries.
carbon sequestration
The proportional relationship between two quantities.
