sci.soil-texture-USDA-triangle Calculator
Classifies soil texture from sand, silt, and clay percentages using the USDA soil texture triangle (12 textural classes). Sandy clay loam (20% clay, 30% silt, 50% sand) has good drainage and is suitable for most arable crops — heavy clay (> 40% clay) is difficult to cultivate but retains water and nutrients well.
Inputs
Sand Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Silt Pct
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
soil texture class
The classification assigned based on the computed value.
normalised sand %
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
normalised silt %
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
normalised clay %
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
USDA soil texture triangle (Thien 1979)
The computed angle in degrees or radians.
