sci.sound-intensity-W-m2 Calculator
Calculates sound intensity I = p²/(ρc) in W/m² from pressure amplitude and computes intensity level IL = 10 log₁₀(I/I₀) where I₀ = 10⁻¹² W/m². Intensity level equals SPL only for plane waves in free field — in a diffuse reverberant room, intensity is lower than SPL suggests due to random wavefronts cancelling.
Inputs
Spl Db
Force per unit area (Pa). Atmospheric pressure at sea level: 101,325 Pa. Check whether gauge or absolute pressure is required.
R M
Separation between two points or total path length. Check that units are consistent throughout the calculation.
Q Directivity
A multiplier applied in the calculation.
Results
sound intensity I (W/m²)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
acoustic power W (W)
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
SPL at 2×distance (dB)
The computed distance or separation.
SPL at 10×distance (dB)
The computed distance or separation.
I = 10^((SPL-120)/10) W/m²
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
