sci.thin-lens-magnification Calculator
Calculates angular and lateral magnification of a thin lens from object distance, image distance, and focal length. Lateral magnification m = −di/do: negative = inverted image; |m| > 1 = magnified; |m| < 1 = reduced — camera lenses produce inverted, reduced real images on the sensor.
Inputs
F Mm
Linear measurement. Ensure consistent units: 1 m = 1,000 mm = 3.281 ft.
Do Mm
Separation between two points or total path length. Check that units are consistent throughout the calculation.
Results
image distance di (mm)
The computed distance or separation.
magnification m
The value at the specified point or condition.
image type
The classification or type assigned based on the inputs.
image size relative to object
The value at the specified point or condition.
1/f = 1/do + 1/di
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
m = −di/do
