sci.wave-intensity Calculator
Calculates wave intensity (power per area), the inverse-square law falloff with distance, and the decibel scale for sound intensity. Sound intensity doubles (≈3 dB increase) when source power doubles — moving twice as far from a source reduces intensity by a factor of 4 (6 dB drop).
Inputs
Power W
Rate of energy transfer (W). P = V×I (electrical). P = F×v (mechanical). 1 horsepower ≈ 746 W.
Distance M
Separation between two points or total path length. Check that units are consistent throughout the calculation.
Frequency
Cycles per second (Hz). Audible sound: 20 Hz – 20 kHz. Make sure units match what the formula expects.
Medium
Reference formula or conversion factor shown for context.
Results
intensity (W/m²)
Sample size or count used in the calculation.
sound level (dB)
The measured or computed level on the applicable scale.
